Earth Day - Great Fun for all

Bravo!  Earth Day '06 -- "Cycles" -- was a huge success.  This year we had approximately 500 participants who roamed Lakeside Nature Center and learned about the 5 different cycles -- Life, Water, Nitrogen, Carbon and Energy.  This year's participants were to complete an Earth puzzle consisting of 5 cycle segments.  A piece of the puzzle was passed out at each cycle station.  After completing the puzzle, participants exchanged it for a gift-table prize.

At each station, visitors learned about one of the cycles, picked up brochures, and completed a related craft.

Volunteers led guided hikes on the Nature Center's trails.  I saw lots of folks come back all sweaty -- I am sure that meant that they had  great time.

Animal presentations livened the proceedings.  Snakes were a great hit; in fact, naturalists gave extra programs by popular demand.

The Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City discussed the rain garden initiative.  (For more information on rain gardens, please go to http://www.rainkc.com).  They also answered gardening questions.  The Missouri Native Plant Society was also present with some beautiful native plants and flowers.

Lemonade and Animal cookies were served and enjoyed by all.
